An area
located in central Greece, the very fertile plain of Thessalia is
bordered by Mts. Pindus, Olympos, Pelion, Orthris and Agrafa. A region
steeped in myth and history due to its connections with the home of the
gods (Olympos) and the Centaurs who inhabited Pelio, it is famous for
the most unusual natural phenomenon of perpendicular rocks upon which
Byzantine monks, approximatly 600 years ago built a monastic community
which to this day are subject for discussion, as no-one can explain how
these monasteries were built on top of these rocks. This is the Meteora,
a fascinating almost lunar atmosphere in which monasteries were built so
that monks could be close to God in their worship. |
